"An Interview with Matthew Youn, the CEO of Tavalon Australia"

There are few pleasures in life as simple as a cup of tea. The warmth envelops you and acts as an escape- even just for a moment- from the stresses of daily life. The humble cup of tea is not only a catalyst to relaxation; its daily consumption also has a plethora of benefits for your health, not to mention the traditions of tea and the many ways it brings people together socially - its magic is something that is hard to describe merely with words. Unfortunately, many people in Australia are not aware of the benefits of tea drinking and the simple joy it provides. Upon this realisation, health-conscious and luxury-oriented entrepreneur, Matthew Youn, decided that it's time to change this.

As an avid tea drinker, Matthew has always known and observed the benefits of drinking tea and was increasingly made aware of many people’s choices to drink coffee over tea- unaware of the benefits they were throwing away when making their beverage choice. So, Matthew decided to become an agent for change- to start educating people about tea by supplying Australians with the best quality tea available. In his quest to find the world’s finest tea, there was no other comparable tea company to Tavalon tea which is blended by an exclusive tea sommelier who travels all over the world to collect the finest ingredients from only boutique tea farms. He was so passionate about his new venture for change that he sacrificed his role as Chief Executive Officer of a few well-established finance firms as well as his decent remunerations, to invest his time and passion into Tavalon Australia.

“Sometimes in life you have to give up something great, to gain something even greater. I am not afraid to lose what I have. I like to challenge myself and I know for a fact that only in taking risk, will I get better.” Matthew said.

Matthew is a South Korean-born Australian businessman, who currently holds 9 directorships in both public and private companies in Australia including his new role as Chief Executive of Tavalon Australia, Matthew also currently holds the following prestigious titles; Vice Chairman of Credit Counsellors Australia and the Managing Partner of Unity Equity Partners. He has previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of SRMC Limited and Credit Counsellors Australia, and as one of the youngest members who joined AICD by invitation several years ago, he now sits on the board of directors and serves as a non-executive director of various organisations.

Matthew, an alumnus of London Business School, is a qualified Public Accountant and holds a number of degrees including Executive MBA, Masterclass in Private Equity, Master of Commerce, Graduate Certificate of Professional Accounting, and Bachelor of Business. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Institute of Public Accountants, Personal Insolvency Professionals Association, Institute of Financial Accountants, INSOL International, and American Bankruptcy Institute. He currently holds three Australian Credit Licenses issued by ASIC and is also a Sports Coach accredited by the Football Federation Australia and the Australian Rugby Union.

“I am fortunate to have a lot of supporters from different fields and I appreciate them all. Dr. Soheil Abedian, the founder and chairman of Sunland Group has given me a huge support by guiding me in a right way. Soheil is someone I always look up to. He taught me how to give back to society and how to contribute to the betterment of the world! I have changed a lot since I met him and our weekly meetings have molded me to become a better person. I used to be busy chasing money and I ignored a lot of good virtues - love, humanity, and unity. Now I have a stronger moral ethic than ever.”

Driven by strong morals and values, Matthew leads with honesty and integrity. His focus on creating an environment that drives productivity and loyalty is a tangible benefit to clients. His vision encompasses Honesty, Excellence, Accountability, Respect and Teamwork- these values are the H.E.A.R.T. of a successful team; an integral part to having a functioning team and business and provides the perfect framework to lead a passionate team to achieve the best service in any given industry.

As an investor who runs private equity funds, Matthew frequently receives a number of business proposals and opportunities, but only chooses to start and manage a business that he believes in, and he has found his new passion in the tea business, especially with his business partner and mentor, John-Paul Lee, who founded Tavalon 12 years ago in New York City.

“I have a lot of people who support me and because of them, I will have to do better. They have become one of my motivations. When you know that you have people investing in you, you have to make sure you become successful in what you do as a return on their  investment – this is how I operate and I always believe that in the end, it all boils down to trust and respect!”

Despite taking a risk, and sacrificing a great deal for new venture with Tavalon Australia, Matthew has no regrets with the knowledge that he has the chance to educate others to begin a new tradition that will help them physically, mentally and emotionally. His belief is that tea drinking is holistically beneficial to humans and so he is motivated, passionate and excited to begin his adventure in the tea business.

His clear wealth of experiences and education have equipped him with the courage and confidence to take this challenge and make a positive difference to one person, one cup of tea at a time, until it reaches the world.
